Adam Rokhsar, biography:

Adam Rokhsar is a multimedia artist with degrees in psychology from Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania.  His career began at the New York Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains, where he worked at a Day Treatment Unit for people with Borderline Personality Disorder.  Since then, he served as a therapist and behavioral science specialist for homeless teenagers, child victims of sexual abuse, adult sex offenders, and people with cerebral palsy and autism.  He was nominated for employee of the year by the Cerebral Palsy Association of New York in 2007.

His career as a researcher began at Cornell University, where Adam worked in the Gilovich Social Psychology Laboratory to assist in experimental design and research on decision-making and priming behaviors. He taught a weekly seminar in the Design and Environmental Analysis department on human-environment relations to undergraduates.  Adam was the head student researcher for Dr. Gary Evans’ longitudinal study on children living in rural poverty, conducting interviews with parents and children throughout upstate New York.  Adam was awarded status as a Cornell University National Scholar.

Adam left the field of mental health services to integrate his commitment to improving people’s lives with his passion for the arts and technology. He began studying at New York University’s Music Technology program in 2007, and quickly discovered a deep interest in learning machines and programming. He is a member of the Music Information Retrieval Laboratory, the head coordinator of the Music Technology student interest groups, and co-organized the program’s largest open house event in May 2009.

While earning a Master’s degree in Music Technology from New York University, Adam designs sound for interactive installations, teaches computer music and video programming, and is working on a Master’s thesis on machine learning algorithms. He is the lead singer for Brooklyn-based indie rock band The Recovery, a computer music performer, and live video artist who has worked with a variety of musicians throughout New York.  His sound design work can currently be seen in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, and his video work was displayed in the Jakopic Gallery as part of multimedia project Senza Televisione.  Recently, Adam was a performer in an electroacoustic improvisation conducted online between New York Univeristy and Copenhagen; the performances was simultaneously broadcast at NYU and in Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens as part of the Renew Festival.

Adam’s interests are in building connections between people through art and technology. He continues to work towards developing new ways of augmenting our humanity with technology, and is currently co-authoring a paper on the ethical application of machine learning algorithms in automated systems.
